Vinukonda Nagaraju

Vinukonda Nagaraju (born in 1940) was a distinguished Telugu novelist, journalist, editor and social thinker from West Godavari district. Coming from a modest rural background, he became the first student from his surrounding villages to pursue postgraduate studies, earning an M.A. in English Literature from Andhra University along with a Gold Medal for academic excellence. He began his career as a lecturer and later worked with the Intelligence Wing of the Andhra Pradesh State Home Department before turning his full attention to literature, journalism and public affairs. In 1972, Nagaraju founded the socio-political fortnightly Kammendo, serving as its Editor, Publisher and Proprietor. Through the magazine, he addressed contemporary social and political issues and encouraged young readers to engage with public affairs. He later established the Kammendo Forum in 1976, which instituted the Gold Pen Award to recognise distinguished journalists. As a novelist, he wrote eight Telugu novels, including Desam Nannu Pilichindi, which was written against the backdrop of the 1962 Indo-China war and received recognition from the Andhra Pradesh Government. His best-known work, Oobilo Dunna, also received the Andhra Pradesh Sahitya Akademi Award in 1974, which Nagaraju declined. Beyond literature and journalism, Nagaraju was actively involved in social initiatives and democratic causes. During the Emergency, he supported movements associated with Jayaprakash Narayan and his democratic ideals. He later established the Social Justice NGO, working in areas such as healthcare, sanitation, literacy and educational support, and was also associated with the establishment of Medico Abroad to help make medical education more accessible to middle-class families. His contributions to journalism and public life earned him honours including the Rashtriya Ekta Award and recognition from the Delhi Telugu Academy. Through his literary work, journalism and social initiatives, Nagaraju became a notable figure in modern Telugu literary and public life.
